Supreme Court asks for list of all corrupt MPs and MLAs with criminal cases against them

The Supreme Court of India has asked Chief Secretaries of the states and the registrar general of various high courts to provide a list of the number of MPs and MLAs who have criminal cases pending against them. The apex court has also asked the parties to give it information whether these cases have been transferred to a special court, as per a directive issued by it.

The next hearing for will be on October 12.

The Central Government had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in the case of having special courts for hearing pending criminal cases against tainted MPs and MLAs. The Central Government has told the Supreme Court that so far figures from 11 states including Delhi have been received. Accordingly, 1233 cases against MPs and MLAs have been transferred to 12 Special Fast Track Courts and 136 cases have been disposed of. So there is still 1097 cases pending in the courts across these 11 states.

The most number of cases pending against MPs and MLAs are in Bihar (249). After this, there are 233 cases in Kerala and 226 cases in West Bengal. Data from other states are yet to come. The Supreme Court will hear on Wednesday the affidavit of the Central Government. In fact, in the previous hearing, the Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with the central government's affidavit and said that government hasn't done enough preparation and asked them to file afresh. 

Earlier, the Supreme Court had approved the Central Government's plan for the set-up of 12 special courts for hearing pending cases against MPs and MLAs under scanner. SC said that the special courts should start work by March 1.   Supreme Court is hearing the case based on BJP spokesman Ashwani Upadhyay's petition in which demand for the formation of a special court for the speedy disposal of criminal cases of tainted MPs and MLAs has been made.
