Jaipur doctors perform rare cancer surgery on four-year-old

Doctors at a city hospital successfully operated a four-year-old boy who was suffering from Ewing Sarcoma Liver Cancer which is a rare type of liver cancer. Doctors, who operated the child, said that so far only four such cases are reported in medical records and this was the first such case treated at such young age.

"Krishna (name changed) was complaining of continuous pain in his stomach and after visiting many hospitals his parents brought him to the hospital in June,' Dr Shashikant Saini, Surgical Oncologist at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Center (BMCHRC) said. "The CT Scan showed a 11 cm tumor on left side of the liver. With further investigation including CD99+, FLI1+, biopsy and IHC test it was confirmed that the tumor was Ewing Sarcoma Liver Cancer," added Dr Shashikant.

As a course of treatment the patient was given sessions of chemotherapy as per the international protocol and it was observed that tumor was reduced to 7 cm. "Considering the response, we planned for a surgery and through the surgical procedure the left part of his liver (Left Hepatectony) was removed," Dr Pawan Agarwal, Medical Oncologist at BMCHRC said. "Ewing Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in bones or in the soft tissue around the bones. This cancer most often begins in the long bones of the pelvis, legs or arms, but it can occur in any bone. But in this case cancer occurred in liver, which makes it rarest of rare," added Dr Pawan.

Explaining the challenges involved with the surgery, Dr Shashikant said that "the liver surgery which in itself is extremely complicated process and that too at a very young age made it far more challenging. Fortunately, the surgical procedure was successful.

"Till date only four cases of Ewing Sarcoma Liver Cancer have been recorded across the globe and in all of those patients' age was around 20 years," Dr Atul Adaniya, Medical Director at BMCHRC said.
